Gary Berman is President of Tricon Capital Group (“Tricon”) and a member of the investment committee for Tricon’s private equity funds. He is involved in overseeing all aspects of Tricon’s operations including investment management, investor relations and fundraising, and new strategic initiatives. Since joining Tricon in 2002, Mr. Berman has sourced, underwritten and managed investments in major, institutional quality development projects including high-rise condominiums, mixed use projects, and suburban and urban master-planned communities throughout North America. Mr. Berman led Tricon’s entry into the United States distressed single family rental market and heads up the firms dedicated investment vehicle, Tricon American Homes.
Prior to joining Tricon, Mr. Berman held various positions in real estate development and finance with the Canderel Group of Companies, the Blackstone Group and Goldman Sachs.
Mr. Berman is the co-founder of the Pug Awards, the “People’s Choice Awards” for architecture and an education-based charity established to increase architectural awareness and elevate planning and design standards in Toronto.
Mr. Berman received a Masters of Business Administration from Harvard Business School where he was designated a Baker Scholar, and a Bachelor of Commerce from McGill University in Montreal where he graduated first overall in the Faculty of Management.
Blair Welch co-founded Slate Retail REIT in 2005 and has been in the commercial real estate industry for 18 years. Prior to co-founding Slate, Mr. Welch worked in Private Equity, Investment Banking and Real Estate Lending in North America and Asia. Mr. Welch worked with First National Financial Corporation where he was responsible for developing a successful Canadian commercial mortgage-backed securities program and obtaining its rating as Master and Special Servicer. Prior to that period, Mr. Welch was a Vice President and original member of New York-based Fortress Investment Group, spending time in Tokyo and Toronto, where he was responsible for origination of opportunities. Mr. Welch has also worked with Bankers Trust and Brazos Advisors (now Lonestar), participating in direct investment, securitization and corporate debt transactions in the U.S. and Canada. Mr. Welch holds a B.Com. from the University of British Columbia.
Andrew Kiguel is a Managing Director in the Investment Banking group at GMP Securities. He serves as group head for the firm’s real estate and structured product groups, and is a member of the firm’s New Names Committee. Andrew joined GMP in 2000 and has extensive experience in providing investment banking services to numerous public and private entities, including raising equity and debt capital in excess of C$2 billion over the last three years. He has also worked on numerous M&A transactions including mergers, takeovers and related party transactions. Andrew obtained an MBA from the University of Toronto in 1996.
